Espen Jorstad will get his first outing since winning the 2022 WSOP Main Event in a unique $200,000 pro-am showdown.
The Coin Rivet Invitational will run from September 10 to 12 and form part of the Luxon Pay Mediterranean Poker Party in Cyprus.
Taking inspiration from the 2019 Triton Million in London, the event will be split into two phases. The action kicks off with 32 pros competing on one side of a bracket, and 32 recreational players battling on the other side. After Day One, the brackets will be combined, and the remaining players will fight for the title.
Espen Jorstad leads pros in $200K showdown
World Champion Jorstad was the first of 32 pros to receive an invite. Rob Yong extended an invite to Jorstad during a Coin Rivet podcast on July 30 (see video below from the 35-minute mark).
With a projected prizepool of $20 million and top prize around $5 million, Jorstad snap-called and accepted the offer.
Yong was quick to point out players going back-to-back in major events isn’t unheard of. However, if Jorstad is going to win, he’ll need to beat some of the best players in the world, including Phil Ivey.
Jorstad and Ivey, along with 30 other pros, will be partnered with a rich recreational player. Defining a recreational player isn’t always easy as a lot of people on the high stakes circuit have other streams of income.
For example, Rob Yong is the owner of Dusk Till Dawn poker club and a businessman. It’s the same story with people like Paul Phua, Paul Newey, and recent star of High Stakes Poker and Hustler Casino Live, Krish Menon.
To help define the line between pro and amateur, a special committee consisting of Phua, Yong, and Jason Koon has been formed. They’ll decide which players are invited as pros and which ones are invited as amateurs.
So far, the players confirmed for the Coin Rivet Invitational are:
|Pro Poker Player||Recreational Poker Player|
|Espen Jorstad||Rob Yong|
|Phil Ivey||Paul Phua|
|Sean Winter||James Bord|
|Stephen Chidwick||Ivan Leow|
|Ben Lamb||Bobby Baldwin|
|Steve O’Dwyer||Paul Newey|
|Laszlo Bujtas||Tony G|

As well as offering a different dynamic, the $200,000 buy-in event will showcase the Merit Royal Diamond’s new poker room.
